The victim, Ramlakhan (known by his first name), a resident of Lalua village, had bought some goods on credit a few days ago. On Friday, Ramlakhan was returning home after not getting any minor work, when the accused shopkeeper, Manish RathoreStopped him and asked him for the money which he had.
Ramlakhan then asked for more time to pay, but Rathore and his brothers – Monu and Sonu – slapped and insulted him in front of the other villagers.
After the incident, Ramlakhan returned home quietly and did not eat food. He was found hanging from the ceiling on Saturday morning. The victim’s family and several other members of the Dalit community staged a blockade, demanding immediate registration of a case against the accused. Lakhimpur-Magalganj State Highway Friday
An FIR was later registered against the three accused under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 306 (abetment of suicide) of the IPC and the SC/ST Act.
Police said the body of the victim was sent for post-mortem and handed over to the family later in the evening.
Mitauli SHO Alok Kumar said on Sunday, “A case has been registered against Manish Rathore and his brothers. The case is under investigation. The accused persons are absconding.”
