Panaji: After an attempt to rape a Dutch woman, a hotel staff In Mandrem, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant On Friday requested the hotels to register their employees with the labor department.
“From now on hotels will have to see that their employees have labor card “It will help in getting the permanent addresses of the employees working in the state,” Sawant, released by the Labor Department, told the House during Zero Hour.
“The police are doing their job, but Goa is a tourist state, so hotels should also check the background of potential candidates before hiring them,” he added.
Fatorda MLA Vijay Sardesai Raised the issue of setting up of a police post at Mandrem in view of crime against tourists. “Tourism is being carried out in a haphazard manner in the Mandrem-Morjim belt. Thursday is the second such incident in a week,” Sardesai said.
The CM said that a police outpost would be set up on the lines of the police department.
Sawant said that the accused Abhishek Verma is a resident of Dehradun in Uttarakhand and has already been arrested.
“The hotel did not do a background check of Verma before hiring him,” Sawant said, adding that “hotels should not hire people with a criminal background.”
He added that when a crime is committed by a hotel employee, it helps to trace their antecedents in case a crime is reported, if their proper records are available.
Meanwhile, Yuriko Dias, another hotel employee who was stabbed by Verma when he went to help the Dutch woman, is undergoing treatment at GMC.
“He is out of danger. He will be rewarded for his bravery before August 15,” Sawant said.
Tourism Minister Rohan Khunte as well as Mandrem MLA Jeet Arolkar visited Dias at GMC and appreciated him for helping tourists.
