The spotlight was on Mark Wood on Saturday night. This was not surprising: it was a sensational spell of fast bowling. And it doesn’t happen every day that a five-for in a T20 match happens.
But, Kyle Mayers’ contribution was no less in the spectacular 50-run victory of Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Cricket Stadium. The Super Giants’ innings was built around his 38-ball 73. The 30-year-old West Indian opener couldn’t have expected a better start to his IPL career. He got the chance only because Quinton de Kock was not available for the match.
“I have always dreamed of playing in the IPL; The left-handed batsman, who scored a double century on his Test debut against Bangladesh in 2021, said, I got a chance today. Thought I did.
Meyers said that batting was not easy. “It was a new surface,” he said. “None of my teammates knew how the surface would play. It was a slow start as we were trying to understand how the pitch was reacting and trying to adapt. I stuck in, faced a few balls and then executed my plans when the balls hit my ground.
He praised Wood’s excellent performance. “Getting five wickets in a T20 match is a real achievement,” Meyers said. “He bowled fast and used the wicket to challenge the batsmen.”
