South Western Railway (SWR) is planning to set up theme-based rail coach restaurants at two locations in Bengaluru.

A senior SWR official said a rail coach restaurant would be set up at Majestic at Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna railway station and Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal at Baiyappanahalli (SMVT). “The Rail Coach restaurant will use a railway coach, which will be modified to suit the taste of the foodies. The theme-based rail coach restaurant will start serving customers by October.

SWR has already set up a theme-based rail coach restaurant at Sri Siddharoodha Swami Railway Station in Hubli. The name of the Rail Coach restaurant is ‘Bogie Bogie’.

According to officials, the rail coach restaurants will be located near the main entrance of the railway stations. The restaurant will be air conditioned. In addition, there will be seating outside the dining area of the rail coach restaurant, which will be non-air-conditioned. The refurbished railway coaches will be decorated with paintings, warm lighting and comfortable seats.

As of now, SWR plans to introduce only one such restaurant at each station. As per the plan, an empty coach will be allotted to the selected bidders who can convert it into a theme-based restaurant, which will be operational round the clock.

SWR has planned to design the restaurant to satisfy the tastes of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian visitors. There will be separate kitchens for preparing vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. The restaurant will serve both North Indian and South Indian cuisine, the seating capacity inside the coach restaurant will be 50, and there will be a few more seats outside the coach.
